How to plan your trip to the Pragser Tal valley stress-free and relaxed

To make your visit relaxed during the public holidays and extended season we recommend using public transport. 
Otherwise, you can pre-book at the parking lot P1 on the following days and use the shuttle service to the lake:

Parking lots P2, P3, and P4 are also available, but reservations are not possible – the available spaces are assigned based on availability.
On public holidays and in the extended season, more visitors than usual are expected. 
The road leading to the Pragser Tal valley remains open until the parking spaces are full. The parking spaces at the lake could be filled quickly.

Arrival in summer 2026

From 01.07. to 15.09.2026, access to the Pragser Tal valley between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. is only permitted by public transportation, on foot, by bicycle or upon presentation of an online reservation or a valid transit permit.
 

Outside of this period, access to Prager Wildsee lake is permitted without any temporal restrictions.

Please avoid swimming in Pragser Wildsee lake – it lies within a protected nature park. This is the only way we can preserve its beautiful colors and fragile ecosystem together.

Yes, there are public toilets near the parking space P4. Note: charges apply.

Yes, you can rent one of the small rowing boats. The boat rental is open from 25.04.

As the Pragser Wildsee lake is part of the Fanes-Sennes-Prags Nature Park, bringing your own boats or stand-up paddle boards is not allowed.

You can make an online reservation under certain conditions. Here you find the information. Otherwise, the rental principle is "first come, first served".

It snows from the beginning of December. However, it can also start snowing earlier if temperatures are low.

Parking during the spring holidays and extended season

The street into the Pragser Tal valley is open until the parking spaces are full. There won't be any traffic regulation. You can reach Pragser Tal valley anytime and without a reservation.

On the indicated days you can book a parking space in the parking lot P1. The reservation includes also the shuttle to the Pragser Wildsee lake. You can also hike up to the lake following path nr. 1.

In order to have a secured parking space you can book the parking lot P1 in advance to your visit. The reservation includes also the shuttle that takes you to the Pragser Wildsee lake and back. You can also hike up to the lake following path nr. 1.

The shuttle runs every half hour. First ride: 9.40 am. – Last ride: 17.00 pm.

Yes, the shuttle is included in your car park reservation if you book in advance. The shuttle ticket is valid for the specified number of people.

You can reach Pragser Wildsee lake with the line 442 from Toblach/Dobbiaco. On that line all Guest Passes are currently valid. Line 442 passes every hour.

The general conditions apply according to the GTC. A cancellation can be made up until 72 hours before arrival.

Arrival with your own car, motorhome, coach and motorbike

There are 3 parking lots at the Pragser Wildsee lake. Parking lot P4 is 100 meters, P3 400 meters and P2 800 meters from the lake.
Please note: parking spaces are limited. All parking spaces require a fee.

The P2 parking lot has charging stations for electric cars.

At this time of the year the Pragser Tal valley can be reached by travel coaches at any time.

There is only limited parking for travel coaches.

Close to the lake is the P4 parking lot, where there are free but limited disabled parking spaces. There are also a small number of disabled parking spaces at car park P3. There are three spaces at P2. 

The walk around the Pragser Wildsee lake has a wide forest path on the right-hand side and a path on the left-hand side with several ascents with steps.

There is a toilet for the disabled at the Pragser Wildsee lake near Emma's Bistrot.

Parking spaces for motorhomes are very limited at Pragser Wildsee lake. There are 20 parking spaces for motorhomes at parking lot P4 and cost €45/24h. If you can't find a parking space there, you'll have to look for one outside the Pragser Tal valley.

Arrival by public transport

Bus line 442 takes you directly from Toblach/Dobbiaco, Niederdorf/Villabassa to the Pragser Wildsee lake. Public transport fares apply.

Mobilcards and the Südtirol Alto Adige Guest Pass are valid until June 30 and from September 16. Between July 1 and September 15, you’ll need to make an online reservation.
With the südtirolmobil Pass, you can use the line at any time.

The Mobilcard is available at “südtirolmobil” sales points and at tourist offices. Until June 30 and starting September 16, bus tickets can be purchased from the bus driver.  Please note: Payment is only accepted in cash. A reservation is currently not required.

Up until June 30, on bus 442 Mobilcards & the Südtrol Alto Adige Guest Pass are valid.

Yes, the südtirolmobil Pass is valid for the bus.

No, bicycles cannot be taken along.

Children up to the age of 6 years can access free of charge. Everyone aged 6 or above must pay the entry fee.

You may take your pets on public transport at the regular charge (as per regulation no. 760/2016, article 23).

In winter conditions (snow, slush or ice), ALL vehicles on South Tyrol's state and provincial roads are only allowed to drive with winter tyres or with fitted snow chains (or with equivalent, homologated equipment).

The lake is currently not frozen.

It is forbidden to enter Pragser Wildsee lake when it is frozen over. 

No, there is no Christmas market at the Pragser Wildsee lake.

You can find Christmas markets in Innichen/San Candido, Toblach/Dobbiaco or Bruneck/Brunico.

The traffic regulations in the Pragser Tal valley are valid from 01.07.2026 to 15.09.2026.

From 01.07. to 15.09.2026 the Pragser Tal valley can only be reached between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by public transportation, on foot, by bicycle or on presentation of an online - reservation or a valid transit permit.

The traffic regulations apply to cars, motorcycles, coaches and motorhomes.

No, visiting the Pragser Wildsee lake is free.

From 01.07. to 15.09.2026 the Pragser Tal valley can only be reached between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. by public transportation, on foot, by bicycle or on presentation of an online - reservation or a valid transit permit.

No, before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m. you do not need a reservation to drive to the Pragser Tal valley. The parking spaces can be paid for directly on site.

The passage into Pragser Tal valley is free and possible at all times for those in possession of a disabled pass. It is sufficient to show the pass at the checkpoint at the valley entrance. Close to the lake is the P4 parking lot, where there are free but limited disabled parking spaces. There are also a small number of disabled parking spaces at car park P3. There are three spaces at P2. If you want a guaranteed parking space, you can make a classic booking at any time. This can be booked for a fee.

During the period in which the traffic regulations apply, you can pass through the Pragser Tal valley with a transit permit (issued by the accommodation facility).

The traffic situation and the associated traffic jams were no longer bearable for the valley and the residents.

The Pragser Tal valley is one of the most popular excursion destinations in the summer months. In order to guarantee safety and security, access to the Pragser Tal valley has been restricted. In this way, the number of visitors is automatically reduced and the guests can be offered more freedom and a safer experience.

This also contributes to the protection of the sensitive ecosystem of the Dolomites UNESCO World Heritage.

Arrival with your own car, motorhome, coach and motorbike

When the traffic regulations are in effect, the Pragser Tal valley can only be reached with presentation of an online reservation or a valid transit permit.

Paid parking spaces are available at the Pragser Wildsee lake, in the village of Säge and at the Brückele parking space.

Attention: Parking spaces are limited, chargeable and must be booked.

The same regulations apply as for all other cars.

Motorbikes can book a parking space, the so-called combination ticket, for the same price as cars. You will not receive a discount. The ticket can be booked and paid for online here.

Yes, coaches can get to the Pragser Wildsee lake before 9 a.m. and after 4 p.m. However, there are only limited parking spaces for coaches.

Motorhomes can only book parking lot P1 as part of the combined ticket. Parking lot P1 must be vacated by 8 p.m. at the latest. The ticket can be booked directly here and paid for online.

There are limited parking spaces (20) at P4, these are very busy and therefore almost always occupied. If there is no space there, you must leave the valley and look for a parking space outside. It is recommended to use public transportation.

Transit permits are issued by the respective company for guests of restaurants, shops and other service providers in the Pragser Tal valley. Please contact the relevant company directly.

Arrival by public transport

The bus 439 from Welsberg and the bus 442 from Toblach take you directly to the Pragser Wildsee lake. Online reservation with online payment is required.

You can buy tickets for the Busses to Pragser Wildsee lake in the following Tourist Offices: Prags, Sexten, Innichen, Toblach, Niederdorf, Olang, Gsies-Welsberg-Taisten, Ahrntal, Kiens, Antholzertal und Gitschberg Jochtal

Adult prices range from € 7 to € 13. Children from 6 years pay between € 5 and € 9. Unsold tickets can be purchased at the ticket points. In this case, other price categories apply.

No, the choice of seat is free.

Yes, the return trip must also be reserved with a specific time.

The arrival and the return journey can be booked here. For both journeys you have to specify a time in advance.

On bus lines 439 (Welsberg – Pragser Wildsee lake) and 442 (Toblach – Pragser Wildsee lake) Mobilcards and the Südtirol/Alto Adige Guest Pass are not valid during the period of the traffic regulations. Line 443 on the other hand can be used with guest cards during the period of the traffic regulations.

Yes, the südtirolmobil Pass is valid for the bus. 10 seats are reserved for holders of the südtirolmobil Pass on lines 439 and 442. No reservation is required for those.

Mobilcards are not valid on buses 439 and 442 during the traffic regulation. They can be used on bus line 443.

The busses depart from Toblach and Welsberg.

The busses to the Pragser Wildsee lake run every half hour (except lunch break).

All children need a reservation. For children under 6 years the ticket is free. Children from 6 years old have to pay for the ticket.

Online reservation with online payment is also required for animals. Dogs must be muzzled on all public transport and on the busses.

The Pragser Wildsee lake can be reached by bike at any time. No restrictions apply.

A cycle path leads from Welsberg to Schmieden. From Schmieden it continues on the forest path to St. Veit. In the last section (approx. 2 kilometres), you ride on the main road.

Yes, there are bicycle parking spaces (not lockable) near the Hotel Pragser Wildsee. We would like to point out that bicycle parking spaces are limited.

It is not allowed to take a bike on public transport such as busses. You can take them on the train though.

Arrival on foot

No, a reservation is not required for walking. Pragser Wildsee lake can be visited at any time.

From Welsberg to the Pragser Wildsee lake: From the Welsberg train station, path no. 2 A leads through meadows to Schmieden in the Pragser Tal valley. From there, follow path no. 1, the Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell themed path, to the Pragser Wildsee lake. Information boards along the way tell you about the life and work of the pioneer of alpinism and important developer of the Pragser Dolomites.

From Niederdorf to the Pragser Wildsee lake: From the train station in Niederdorf, trail no. 1 leads past farms via Lärcha to Schmieden in the Pragser Tal valley.  From there, follow path no. 1, the Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell themed path, to the Pragser Wildsee lake. Information boards along the way tell you about the life and work of the pioneer of alpinism and important developer of the Pragser Dolomites.

From Schmieden in the Pragser Tal valley to the Pragser Wildsee lake (Attention! For Schmieden you need to respect the traffic regulation from 01.07 – 15.09): The Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell Weg leads from Schmieden in the Pragser Tal valley to the Pragser Wildsee lake. Viktor Wolf Edler von Glanvell was a pioneer of alpinism and the developer of the Pragser Dolomites. Information boards along the theme trail tell you about his life and work.

You need a ticket for the return journey with the bus. This can be booked here or purchased directly at the ticket booth at the Pragser Wildsee lake.

Information on the combination ticket (arrival with your own car and motorbike)

With early booking (up to one day before)

Combination tickets can be booked for those arriving by car, motorhome or motorbike.

The combination ticket costs 44€.

The combination ticket is valid for the public car parks P1, P2 and P5 (Brückele/Ponticello) and for a limited amount of the spaces at P3.

For those arriving by car or motorcycle, only the so-called “combination tickets” will be offered at the public parking lots (P1, P2 and P5). A parking space reservation alone is not possible.

With a pre-booking, you not only secure your transit permit and a guaranteed parking space worth 44€, but also an exclusive voucher in one of our regional restaurants and shops worth 22€.

The combination ticket can also be booked on the day of arrival. Remaining spaces, which are booked on the day of arrival, cost 44€ and do not contain a voucher.

In the first step you decide on a parking lot and in the second step you are asked to select the company where you would like to redeem the voucher.

The voucher must be redeemed on the day of arrival.

When booking, you have the option of selecting the company, but only as long as the contingent lasts. If the company is fully booked, you must choose another company.

If parking spaces are getting free on the same day, they can be booked later. The price remains at 44€, but a voucher is no longer included for a company.

You need an online reservation if you arrive by car, motorbike, rental car, motorhome or the public bus.

Online tickets can only be paid for using online payment systems and credit cards. Cash is not accepted.
